Accor Group Greater China Sets New Standards with Plant-Based Dining Policy

Accor Group Greater China has declared a target to make half of the dishes offered at its hotel locations nationwide either plant-based or vegetarian by the year 2030. This initiative is highlighted in the upcoming China Hospitality Plant-Based Food Scorecard, a comprehensive industry analysis by Shanghai-based Lever China, set for release next January.

In its commitment to the Plant-Based Food Scorecard, Accor has detailed its aim for 2030 to ensure that 50% of its menu offerings, encompassing both appetizers and main courses, will be plant-based or vegetarian. This approach aims to provide delicious and innovative plant-based dishes to its guests, averaging the offerings across its various hotel menus.

“Accor’s new policy reflects a growing momentum in the hospitality sector to embrace plant-based foods,” said Cecilia Zhao, Sustainability Program Director at Lever China, which worked with Accor Greater China and Accor’s global headquarters on the new policy over the course of the past year. “Accor’s leadership, alongside similar initiatives by other industry peers, demonstrates how the industry can collectively drive meaningful change.”

This move by Accor Group Greater China is part of a broader trend within the hospitality industry towards embracing more sustainable food options to lessen the environmental impact of their operations and contribute to global climate change mitigation efforts. Similarly, Langham Hotels Group has made a commitment to convert half of its menu to plant-based options by 2030. Earlier this year, IHG Greater China also committed to boosting its plant-based menu items to 30% by the end of 2025. Additionally, Huazhu Group’s Orange Hotel brand announced in August a goal to feature at least 70% plant-based menu items by 2025. Dossen Group, too, has pledged that by 2025, 30% of its meals across all properties will be plant-based, marking the most substantial commitment by any hotel group in the nation so far.

The collective efforts of over 4,250 hotels across China to adapt 30-70% of their menus to plant-based offerings in the near future will be showcased in the forthcoming report, highlighting the proactive steps taken by various hotel groups in this vital area of sustainability.
